West New Territories (WENT) Landfill Extension

The WENT Landfill Extension forms an integral part in the Strategic Plan in maintaining the continuity of landfill capacity in the West New Territories. The project is to develop the WENT Landfill Extension (about 200 hectares with capacity of 81 M m3) lying between the existing WENT Landfill and the Black Point Power Station at Nim Wan.

This Project is a designated project under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO) and an EIA was conducted.  We conducted an ecological impact assessment to provide information on the baseline conditions and nature and extent of environmental impacts arising from the construction, operation, restoration and aftercare stages of the WENT Landfill Extension and to contribute to decisions on the overall acceptability of the Project, after the implementation of environmental mitigation measures.

Potential ecological impacts on important habitats including inter-tidal mudflat, mangrove, seagrass bed, woodlands, wetland birds at CLP ash lagoons, natural streams, and inter-tidal and sub-tidal benthic communities were assessed.  Mitigation measures proposed included careful design to avoid marine works, which therefore avoid construction impacts to marine sensitive receivers, transplantation of plant species of conservation importance, compensatory woodland planting and creation of pond habitats for wetland fauna.
