Dr. KWOK Hon-kai

Senior Ecologist (Associate)

Dr. Kwok earned his PhD in Ecology at the University of Hong Kong in 1997 with a dissertation on forest bird ecology at Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve. He is an ornithologist with extensive experience in the avifauna of Hong Kong and South China. He is skilled in sampling and statistical analysis of bird populations and behaviours, and has published a number of papers about avifauna studies on scientific journals.  

Besides avifauna, Dr. Kwok is also familiar with other terrestrial fauna groups including mammals, herpetofauna, butterflies and dragonflies.  He has participated in projects concerning the ecology of these fauna groups, e.g., “Provision of Bat Houses Refurbishment to Kang Yung Study Hall, Sha Tau Kok”, “Survey of Feral Cattle and Buffalo in Hong Kong 2013”.

Dr. Kwok has participated in many EIA studies, ecological studies and ecological monitoring since he joined Ecosystems Ltd. in 1996.  Apart from local projects, Dr. Kwok has also participated in projects in Macau SAR, Mainland China and Southeast Asia.  He has extensive experience in design of ecological survey methodology and impact assessment. Dr. Kwok is also strong at performing statistical analysis and has applied this expertise in many ecological studies.

Apart from ecological impact assessment, Dr. Kwok also provided professional consultancy in other projects concerning wildlife ecology.  For examples, “Provision of Bird Control Professional Service at the Hong Kong International Airport”, “Review of Pond-wiring to Reduce Cormorant Predation in Commercial Fishponds in Inner Deep Bay Area” and designs of eco-gardens.

Dr. Kwok has participated ecological survey organized by non-government organisation, e.g., Kadoories Farm and Botanic Garden.  The surveys covered remote border areas and South China region.  As a member of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, he participated in many bird research activities, including waterfowl count survey, Black-faced Spoonbill census.
